Energy Ministers Meet With UK Parliamentary Under Secretary Of State

Dr. the Honourable Roodal Moonilal, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and the Honourable Ernesto Kesar, Minister in the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries along with Ms. Penelope Bradshaw-Niles, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, met with a delegation from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero of the United Kingdom led by Minister Kerry McCarthy, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The meeting took place on 7th May 2025 at the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries’ International Waterfront Complex, Head Office, Port-of-Spain.


Also present at the meeting were His Excellency Jon Mark Dean, High Commissioner of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago; Mr. Edward Whattoff, Private Secretary at Department for Energy Security and Net Zero; Ms. Lottie Cantle, Deputy Director at Department for Energy Security and Net Zero; and Ms. Chinali Patel, Head of Political, Economic and Press of the High Commission.


At the meeting, the Honourable Minister Dr. Moonilal indicated his intent to forge ahead with the promotion of alternative energy by addressing the legislative and regulatory gaps that hinder their deployment. He also shared his initial thoughts on future policy and institutional strengthening that the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries. Technical, Policy and Regulation Interventions were key areas identified for possible synergies with the UK. He further reiterated his government’s commitment to create a conducive environment for the promotion of green business in Trinidad and Tobago as these
investments would lead to further economic diversification.


The Honourable Minister Kesar emphasized that this Government is committed to adopting a people centric approach to the energy business. Minister Kesar indicated as a deeply entrenched hydrocarbon province the Government is committed to a ‘Just Transition.’ He also highlighted that a possible area of interest for a UK-TT partnership is the promotion of entrepreneurial opportunities through technical assistance. Both parties agreed to work closely together on areas of renewable energy and to ensure
that the energy transition benefits people first.
