The Honourable Ernesto R. Kesar, Minister in the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries; Mrs. Ava Mahabir-Dass Permanent Secretary (Ag.), Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries; and Mrs. Sheena Gosine, Energy International Relations and Affairs Advisor to the Minister at the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, welcomed a high-level delegation from the Republic of Korea led by His Excellency Seijoong Kwon, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago; which included Ms Juhyun Yang, Second Secretary, Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Trinidad and Tobago; and Ms Seungok Ryu, Researcher, Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Trinidad and Tobago. The courtesy visit took place on 12th March 2026 at the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries’ Head Office, Port-of-Spain.
During the meeting, discussions centred on shared interests in the energy sector and opportunities to strengthen collaboration between the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and the Republic of Korea, particularly within the context of the evolving global energy landscape. Key areas of focus included energy security and the potential for strategic partnerships to support sustainable energy development.
Ambassador Kwon acknowledged Trinidad and Tobago’s important role as a key exporter of methanol to Korea, noting the significance of this relationship within Korea’s energy and industrial supply chain. He also expressed optimism regarding Trinidad and Tobago’s prospects in natural gas exploration, highlighting that further advancements could positively impact the country’s petrochemical sector.
Minister Kesar reaffirmed the Government of Trinidad and Tobago’s commitment to strengthening international energy partnerships, in keeping with the Prime Minister’s vision of positioning the country as a regional energy hub and a leading energy player in the Western Hemisphere.
As Trinidad and Tobago advances its sustainable energy agenda and pursues a just energy transition, both parties also identified potential areas for future collaboration, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for renewable power generation, as well as the development of green ammonia and green methanol under a national green hydrogen framework.
The meeting underscored the growing partnership between Trinidad and Tobago and the Republic of Korea, with both sides expressing optimism about continued engagement and deeper cooperation in the areas of energy security, innovation, and sustainable development.
