On July 9th 2025, Dr. the Honourable Roodal Moonilal, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and the Honourable Ernesto Kesar, Minister in the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries joined a Ministerial Delegation to visit our country’s 92.2MW Solar Utility Scale Project located in Brechin Castle, Couva.
The Honourable Barry Padarath, Minister of Public Utilities, Honourable David Lee, Minister of Housing, Honourable Clyde Elder, Minister in the Ministry of Public Utilities, Honourable Shivana Sam, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Public Utilities and Honourable Hansen Narinesingh, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training were also present at the site visit.
The Brechin Castle Solar Project is a joint effort among the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (GoRTT), Lightsource Renewable Global Development Limited, Shell Trinidad and Tobago Limited and BP Alternative Energy Trinidad and Tobago Limited. Once commissioned, the project will be largest Solar Utility Scale Plant in the CARICOM Region.
The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries is proud to report that the solar plant is on track to deliver its ‘first electrons’ during ‘quarter 3′ 2025. Once commissioned, the project is expected to successfully deliver its full capacity, to the national grid by December 2025. It is anticipated, that the green electricity produced will be equivalent to powering 31,500 homes per year and will lead to approximately 123,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions saved.
The GoRTT is committed to reducing this country’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions through the use of cleaner forms of energy and the promotion of Renewable Energy (RE). This project will be essential towards achieving our commitments to the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), and meeting the objective of a reduction in overall emissions from the three main emitting sectors: Power Generation, Transportation and Industrial Sectors by 15% by 2030, from Business as Usual (BAU) levels. By increasing reliance on renewable energy sources, the project also aims to decrease natural gas consumption for electricity generation, thereby lowering GHG emissions.
Dr. the Honourable Roodal Moonilal highlighted the pivotal role of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries in the Brechin Castle Solar Project and underscored the private sector’s dedication to facilitating Trinidad and Tobago’s shift towards a low-carbon economy. The Minister noted that this initiative marks a significant step in achieving the nation’s sustainable energy objectives and conveys a clear message to the broader community about the urgency of the energy transition.
