Energy Ministry Welcomes Korea Energy Agency and H2Korea

Energy professionals from the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) welcomed delegates from the Korea Energy Agency (KEA) and H2Korea on Friday 3rd November,2023, for a day of knowledge exchange focused on the renewable energy sector. The MEEI team led by Margaret Edwards Barran, Senior Energy Analyst (Ag.)  along with Hannibal Anyika, Senior Sustainable Energy Development Analyst and Dr. Winston O’Young, Senior Policy and International Relations Officer, met with Dr. Sang-Hoon Lee, President, and Chief Executive Officer; Young Seop Lee, Chief Secretary and Na Young Kim, Project Manager of the KEA along with Dr. Han Sangme, Chief Operating Officer and InJoon Oh, Senior Researcher of H2Korea at the Energy Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago, Point Lisas. At this meeting the Republic of Korea delegation was updated on the local renewable energy sector with focus on the national commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% from our main emitting sectors by 2030.

All parties journeyed to the National Energy Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (National Energy) where in keeping with the theme of sustainable energy, the MEEI’s Zahra Cielto-Bowrin, Sustainable Energy Development Analyst presented on Project Lara. This was followed by updates on the Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage initiatives by Lorez Des Vignes, Technical Liaison CCS/CO2 EOR Steering Committee.

National Energy representatives took the opportunity to highlight Trinidad and Tobago’s major energy sector developments throughout the years from 1857 to present, with visual aids on the current energy landscape and facilities. The afternoon ended with presentations and discussions on current projects and initiatives followed by the exchange of knowledge among all participants.

The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries continues to strategically nurture vital relationships with international stakeholders in support of the sustainable advancement of the energy sector.

The KEA visited Trinidad and Tobago, as a Presidential Envoy of the World Expo 2030 to be held in Busan. In turn, the KEA and H2Korea were invited to return to Trinidad for the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Conference in June 2024, to continue exploring the possibilities for a mutually beneficial partnership.

The KEA is a public institution established under the Ministry of Trade Industry and Energy of Government of the Republic of Korea, with responsibility for the implementation of energy efficiency, new and renewable energy and change mitigation policies.

The Republic of Korea’s Hydrogen Convergence Alliance (H2Korea) is a public-private consultative body for revitalizing hydrogen, launched with the aim of consolidating the capabilities of relevant ministries, agencies, and companies to lead the global hydrogen industry through policy tasks, institutional improvements, and the establishment of a support system for the promotion of privately-led hydrogen.
