Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister the Honourable Stuart R. Young MP along with Permanent Secretary Mrs. Penelope Bradshaw-Niles and Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ms. Karinsa Tulsie of the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries met with officials from Nutrien, Denbury and the National Gas Company on Wednesday 29th March 2023 at the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries International Waterfront Complex Head Office.
Nutrien and Denbury offered technical support to the MEEI and to the NGC with respect to the further exploration of Trinidad and Tobago’s potential to implement carbon reduction solutions within its petrochemical sector.
As a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, Trinidad and Tobago has a target of cutting emissions by 15% by 2030 (UNDP, 2018). Carbon Dioxide Capture for Sequestration (CCUS) or Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) is therefore aligned with the Government’s policy to explore and implement low carbon solutions by reducing the emissions intensity of natural gas which is recognized as the cleanest burning fossil fuel.
Nutrien is an existing valuable stakeholder in Trinidad and Tobago’s petrochemical sector as the company is a major producer and exporter of ammonia and urea.
Globally, Nutrien has made significant progress in reducing Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions from its facilities by capturing and utilising the Carbon Dioxide (CO2) produced for sequestration or for use in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR).
Executive Vice President and CEO, Nitrogen and Phosphate Nutrien communicated the company’s commitment to champion Carbon Dioxide (CO2) sequestration and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) initiatives in its operations within Trinidad and Tobago.
Nutrien is currently partnered with Denbury in implementing its low carbon strategies. Denbury has been providing unique carbon solutions since 1999. The company’s strategic focus has been to be a leader in carbon capture, utilization and storage including Enhanced Oil Recovery. With 20+ years’ experience in managing CO2, Denbury expressed its interest in providing valuable expertise in progressing low carbon strategies in Trinidad and Tobago’s energy sector.
Energy Minister Young indicated that he looks forward to continued discussions with the companies with respect to solutions that are aligned with the country’s commitment to promote the use of natural gas as a major energy source for the production of clean petrochemicals in a low carbon future.
