The Honourable Stuart R. Young S.C., M.P. Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister met with Nutrien executives on 17th October, 2024 at the Cabildo Building, Sackville Street, Port-of-Spain.
The Nutrien executives present at the meeting were Mr.Trevor Williams, Executive Vice President, Nitrogen and Phosphate, Nutrien; Mr. Edmond Thompson, Vice President and Managing Director, Nutrien Trinidad; and Ms. Renee Munasifi, Senior Director, Global and Government Affairs, Nutrien.
At the meeting, Mr.Trevor Williams, Executive Vice President, Nitrogen and Phosphate, Nutrien provided the Energy Minister with an update on its capital expenditure on maintenance, turnarounds and upgrades in 2024. Nutrien invested approximately US 130 million dollars into its Trinidad and Tobago operations this year and expressed continued commitment to Trinidad and Tobago’s petrochemical sector. The upgrade, turnaround and maintenance employed over 1600 local employees.
With the production of fertilizers heavily dependent on natural gas as feedstock, Minister Young noted the critical role of natural gas to Trinidad and Tobago’s fertilizer production and agricultural sector. Minister Young stated that as a responsible government, The Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago is prepared to work with everyone to go after each molecule of gas, in the interest of energy security and food security.
Nutrien is the third-largest nitrogen producer in the world, with over seven million tonnes of gross ammonia capacity and the ability to produce more than 11 million tonnes of total nitrogen products in the US, Canada, and Trinidad. Its Trinidad location operates out of the Point Lisas Industrial Estate.
