Minister Young Participates in U.S. Department of State Bureau of Energy Resources (ENR) Power Sector Program Training Session

The Honourable Stuart R. Young S.C, M.P. Minister of Energy and Energy Industries and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister delivered remarks at the opening of a workshop training session conducted by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Energy Resources (ENR) Power Sector Program (PSP). The three-day workshop titled, ‘Power Grid Flexibility on High-Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) Islands,’ was launched on 29th July, 2024 at the BRIX, Autograph Collection hotel.

At the opening session, Minister Young stated that we must continue to partner with our friends, the United States and learn from their experiences. The Honourable Minister also urged the local and foreign participants to consider the ‘bankability’ of renewable energy projects in the region as factors such as the small population sizes of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) affect their financial ability to refurbish grids for taking on the increased volume of electricity coming in from renewable energy.

This initiative is in support of the U.S. Caribbean Partnership to Address the Climate Crisis 2030 (PACC 2030). Participants of the workshop included the PACC 2030 team of utility experts from Hawaii, The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI), Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) and Regulated Industries Commission (RIC). The workshop includes collaboration with CARILEC’s Community of Practice (CoP) for Resilient Energy Regulation and intends to help Caribbean electric utilities and regulators build capacity on renewable energy development and integration to promote electricity supply security, stability and affordability.

Her Excellency Candace A. Bond Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago also delivered remarks at the training session and highlighted the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to supporting clean energy development in Trinidad and Tobago.
